Managing Seasonal Allergies: Tips for Relief

Spring is here, and with that comes the uncomfortable side effects of seasonal allergies. If you’re sneezing, sniffling, or dealing with itchy eyes, you’re not alone. This time of year can be hard for allergy sufferers, but there are things you can do to help. Here are some tips to manage those pesky symptoms so you can enjoy the season without the sniffles.

Common Symptoms of Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever, are triggered by pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. When your immune system reacts to these pollen particles, it can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Post-nasal drip (the feeling of mucus dripping down the back of your throat)

These symptoms can be frustrating, but the good news is there are ways to manage them effectively.

Natural Solutions to Manage Allergies

Some patients prefer to try natural remedies first, and a few of them have pretty good research to suggest they may be helpful. You can try:

  • Local honey – Some studies suggest that consuming local honey can help your body build a tolerance to local pollen, potentially reducing allergic reactions. Try adding a teaspoon to your morning tea or spreading it on toast. A great place to find honey from your area is your local farmer’s market.
  • Nasal Rinsing – Using a saline spray or nasal rinse can help flush pollen and other allergens from your nasal passages, giving you quick relief from congestion. For ease, you can get a ready to use spray at most drug stores. For a more thorough rinse, try a neti pot. Make sure you follow directions to ensure safety!
  • Probiotics – Research shows that gut health plays a role in immune function. Taking probiotics may help reduce the severity of allergic reactions by supporting a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut.

Over-the-Counter Medications For Allergy Relief

If natural remedies aren’t cutting it, there are plenty of effective over-the-counter (OTC) medications available to manage your symptoms. Medications like Claritin, Zyrtec, or Allegra block histamines, the chemicals your body releases in response to allergens. They can help relieve sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. For more severe symptoms we typically suggest the use of a nasal steroid spray like Flonase to help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.

Consult With Your Health Care Provider

While many people can manage their seasonal allergies with over-the-counter remedies, if your symptoms are severe, persist despite treatment, or are affecting your daily life, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional. We can help you identify your triggers, suggest stronger medications, or even explore allergy testing and immunotherapy options.
